It’s a common situation in the age of Instagram: to bring back a bunch of photos from a trip and not know where to put them. And there is no more room for them on all the hard drives, flash drives, or even on your smartphone. I am too lazy to clean out all the junk files, but I can’t afford to delete them. But I want to admire the pictures so much!
I have an idea for you, how you can turn your pictures into something more than a work of art. Which you can send to loved ones, to collect, paste into your travel book, or hang up near the workplace, so you can remember more often about vacation and will make it easier to survive everyday life. I will teach how to make postcards in just few simple steps.
WHAT TO BEGIN WITH.
You don’t have to be a designer to make a cool card. You just need to know which programs or online services can do it easily. And where there are already some postcard templates. For example, let’s create a postcard in the online service Canva. It is a great tool that you can use to design not just postcards but a lot of things using their pre-made templates which you can edit according to your needs and liking.
What is Canva?
Canva is not your everyday website, it is a well know website used my Millions for there creativity. It hash everything you need to fuel up your creativity. Whether you want to make postcards, invitations, brochures or logos it is one destination for all.
We have a special offer for you
To start the design, log in to the website – you need a Google/Facebook account or your email. On the home page, in the search bar in the center of the screen, start typing the word “postcard.” The website will suggest suitable options in a drop-down list, choose anyone according to your liking.
On the next page, follow simple steps to design a postcard:
- Choose any design template you like
- Add your photo from the trip
- Edit it if necessary
- Complete the design with graphic elements
- Write the text of the postcard
- Save it and send it to your loved ones, place it in your workplace, or hang it on the wall.
You can create up to thirty design pages at a time by clicking the “Add Page” button under the layout. In the templates section all colors and objects are easily replaceable, so do not get upset if you do not find a suitable one right away. Trust your imagination and creativity.
PHOTO UPLOADING AND PROCESSING
I would like to make a personalized postcard by adding my photo. It’s easy to do this through the “Uploads” section. Click on the add button and select the file on your computer. You can then drag and drop it onto the layout for the template.
Choose a good quality photo with a high resolution, especially if you plan to print the postcard. Once added to the layout, the photo can be edited with the buttons at the top. A set of filters, contrast settings, brightness, color correction – everything to make the image catchy is available here.
You can change the background of the postcard on the corresponding tab. Simple gradients, different patterns, and solid colors are available.
ADDING TEXT TO THE POSTCARD
Templates often include fields for captions, wishes, and other text. If they are not available, add them with the button through the Text section on the left panel. Move the mouse to the desired area of the postcard and type in whatever you need.
While you’re doing this, additional settings will appear in the panel above. Here you can select different fonts, change the size, color, letter and line spacing, and other settings.
Tip: If you want to create a double-sided card but didn’t choose a template originally, click the “Add Page” button under the layout and place the text that will be on the back of the card if it’s made for printing.
INSERTING ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS
Postcard templates often already include graphic elements. But you can change them or add new ones as you like. Go to the “Elements” section in the panel on the left to choose the appropriate graphics.
In this card, I used a gradient stamp to make a nice background for the lettering. You can change the color of the element and its transparency to your liking. The element moves to the back/front using the buttons above the layout. And the size and position of the element can be changed with the mouse. In this case, guides will help whenever you drag any element, which will align the element to the center of the layout and will not let your inner perfectionist suffer.
Once you’ve added an item, you can change its color, transparency, foreground, or background display-all of which the buttons above the layout allow you to do. You can move or resize right on the layout with the mouse. When you move elements, guide lines will appear to help position design components relative to each other.
DOWNLOADING THE FINISHED DESIGN
To download the finished work, click the “Download” button in the upper right corner. The PNG format is suitable for high-quality e-cards. If you plan to print postcards, choose PDF multipage format. Use photo paper that maximizes color saturation and sharpness of images.
Put your creativity into your most memorable moments. Even very ordinary photos from your phone can be turned into bright and colorful postcards using simple and intuitive tools.
By the way, Canva has an app for smartphones and tablets, with which you can create a postcard with a couple of taps on the screen. Postcards will always be in fashion, especially when there’s nothing else to come in the mailbox but spammy ads, enjoy your creativity and send your friends and family your original greeting from your trip! 💛
